In honor of founding Board members Albert Brewer and Bo Torbert, the Board of Directors of the Alabama Appleseed Center for Law & Justice has established the Brewer/Torbert Public Service Award. The award will be given annually to an individual in Alabama who has demonstrated a substantial commitment to public service and the improvement of the lives of the citizens of Alabama.

Sponsorship Information 2010 Dr. Regina Benjamin and Mike Warren Dr. Regina Benjamin and Mike Warren will be presented with the Brewer/Torbert Public Service Award at a luncheon on Thursday, April 29, 2010, commencing at 12:00 P.M.(noon) at the Harbert Center in Birmingham. Attendance is open to the public provided a reservation is made with Alabama Appleseed by April 20th. Former Recipients: 2009 Odessa Woolfolk - Educator and Civil Activist Alabama Appleseed will present Odessa Woolfolk of Birmingham, Founding President and Chair Emerita of the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, with the 2009 Albert Brewer/Bo Torbert Public Service Award. Odessa Woolfolk was chosen for this award as one of Alabama’s most endearing, committed and effective civic leaders. For many years she has been an exceptional and exemplary civic leader both in the Birmingham/Jefferson County area and statewide. As Founding President and Chair Emeriti of the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, she has been a champion for justice for the African American community and people of color not only in Alabama but also worldwide. 2008 J. Gorman Houston, Jr. - Former Alabama Supreme Court Justice He has committed both his time and resources in many areas including Constitutional Reform, Merit selection of Judges and Justices and Equal Representation for the Indigent. He was integral in the decision in case concerning Judge Roy Moore and the Ten Commandments Monument. He continued to serve his home communities in Eufaula and Montgomery in addition to working on projects throughout the state. 2007 Tom Carruthers - Partner, Bradley Arant Boult Cummings, LLP He has committed both his time and resources to a myriad of civic projects, including the Board President Birmingham Legal Aid, Alabama Tax Reform Development Committee, Children's Hospital of Alabama and Leadership Alabama and Birmingham. Alabama Appleseed chose Mr. Carruthers for this award because of his many outstanding public service activities that have benefited so many Alabamians and contributed to the betterment of our cities and state. 2006 Bill Smith - Chairman, Royal Cup Coffee He has committed both his time and resources to a myriad of civic projects, including Leadership Birmingham, Leadership Alabama, A+ Education Foundation, The Public Affairs Research Council of Alabama (PARCA), and the UAB Health System. Alabama Appleseed chose Mr. Smith for this award because of his many outstanding public service activities that have benefited so many Alabamians and contributed to the betterment of our cities and state.
